I grew up without a father, and life was tough. With no one to guide me, I had to figure things out on my own. I sought knowledge, worked with different people in various jobs, and asked questions whenever I didn’t know something. Some were willing to teach me, while others weren’t. I turned to books and the internet, though it wasn’t as advanced then.
When I became a parent, I made it a priority to teach my kids practical skills from a young age — starting as early as 2. I taught them plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, roofing, drywall, painting, mechanics, how to plant trees, and gardening. I wanted to give them a head start in life so they’d never have to endure the struggles I faced.
I once read that children who spend time working on DIY projects with their dads tend to grow up to be more successful in life. The Fathering Project highlights the vital role fathers and father figures play in children’s lives, with evidence showing their potential to positively influence their children’s health, social success, and academic achievements.
