The season of trials

"There are times in life where we have awakenings. A series of horrible things happen that make us question everything and re-prioritize life. It puts us in such an other-worldly mode, that we end up doing such amounts of dua and dhikr that we never before thought possible.

Imam al-Haddad talks about this. He calls this al-baa'ith (that which sends, since the tests send us up to higher levels of detachment from dunya and awareness of Allah). He says that when Allah wishes to improve a believer, they are sent a season of tests. Test after test. Trial after trial. Tribulation after tribulation. Whatever could go wrong, does go wrong, and you're just amazed at how this perfect storm has suddenly consumed you from every angle. You then dig deeper and deeper from within and without knowing it, begin transforming. You begin leaving off old pleasures and past-times simply because they have become distasteful, or you're just not in the mood.

When this happens, Imam al-Haddad continues, the person should not make the mistake of thinking that life will always be like this and that they must keep up that regimen of worship and dhikr forever. Rather, when the desired effect of that season of trials has become complete, then the hardships will go away one by one, and ease and prosperity will return. When that happens, Imam al-Haddad tells us, the person can just keep up half of what they were doing before, while remembering the lessons learned and reminding themselves of how they were able to detach.

Most likely, everyone has experienced this cycle. (Sometimes things are so good for so long that you get this gnawing voice in the back of your head telling you you're due. It's like your car being due for a car wash.) But where have you seen this concept so beautifully and accurately explained like this? And most of all, the Imam gives us practical guidance, so that we know what to do during and after such seasons of trials. This is the value of the science of tasawwuf when it is taught by an experienced scholar. The book is in Arabic and entitled Adaab Suluk al-Murid.

May Allah let us all understand and benefit from these seasons and trials, and never forget the lessons we learned. Ameen."

Qadar

Sometimes you meet someone, and it's so clear that the two of you, on some level belong together. As lovers, or as friends, or as family, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you understand one another or you're in love or you're partners in cr!me. You meet these people throughout your life, out of nowhere, under the strangest circumstances, and they help you feel alive. I don't know if that makes me believe in coincidence, or fate, or sheer blind qadar, but it definitely makes me believe in something about Qadar.

Islam, Arabs and Intelligent World of the Jinn

by Amira El-Zein

Book Summary:

“According to the Qur’an, God created two parallel species, man and the jinn, the former from clay and the latter from fire. Beliefs regarding the jinn are deeply integrated into Muslim culture and religion, and have a constant presence in legends, myths, poetry, and literature. In Islam, Arabs, and the Intelligent World of the Jinn, Amira El-Zein explores the integral role these mythological figures play, revealing that the concept of jinn is fundamental to understanding Muslim culture and tradition. Examining closely a wide range of sources, from the fields of law, theology, and folklore, El-Zein clearly places the status of the jinn in the metaphysical and cosmological economy of Islam.

The author also illuminates the Islamic concept of the jinn by comparing it to other similar concepts in different religions and mythologies. She probes the complex relationships between the jinn and humans, as well as the jinn and animals, providing critical insights into the function of the jinn in the process of poetic and cultural creation. The author’s access to Arabic sources and her ability to contextualize them make this a compelling and thorough account, enriching our knowledge of Islamic religion and tradition.”

Sepagi bersama Ara

"Ara, kayuh jom. Bawa buku sekali"
"Okey"

.

"Orang suruh bawa buku. Dia bawa fail kes"
"Kita bawa 2 buku eh and ni bukan fail kes. Notebook je"
"Kenapa Ara minat sangat dengan kes tu?"
"Bilik tidur terbakar. Kecederaan luka tembus akibat anak panah"
"Anak panah tu siapa punya?"
"Anak tiri si mati"
"Okey"
"Okey, faham"
"Tapi pelik, kalau dia masih hidup pada waktu pagi, kenapa PA dia call, mesej, dia tak jawab. Kawasan rumah dia ada guard, kena ada kad akses kalau nak masuk"
"Motif pembunuhan?"
"Tak pasti"
"Duit, dendam, cemburu?"
"Duit maybe tapi dendam tak pasti. Penama penerima EPF bekas isteri dia"
"Eh?"
"Pelik kan?"
"Pelik juga la kenapa dia tak tukar nama isteri baru"
"Tak mungkin dia lupa tukar. Betul tak?"
"Sengaja tak nak tukar?"
"Maybe but why?"
"Hara rasa ada orang tolong cover up?. Saja bakar nak sembunyikan motif sebenar"
"Katanya ada letupan tapi semasa prosiding, letupan tak wujud. Berita tentang letupan keluar sebelum pakar autopsi keluarkan kenyataan rasmi"
Abang dia buat pinjaman tapi letak nama dia. Dia kena bayar sebab tak nak nama sangkut dekat bank"
"Mana abang tahu ni?"
"Abang selalu baca blog dia. Dia tulis dah hilang hormat pada abang dia sebab sikap suka susahkan keluarga"
"Salah satu hujah pihak pembelaan tentang krisis keluarga.
"Patutlah Ara minat sangat.
Ceritalah. Nak catat"
"Nak catat eh"
"Haah"
"In the midst of my chaos, I found solace in you”
"Jual ayat ehhh"
"Ye"
"Sempattt"
"Mesti!"

Happiness

What is happiness to Rumi?

Rumi said that there is an inherent sadness in the spirit of everyone. This sadness is caused by our separation from the source. We are deeply unhappy about being separated from the source. We cannot reach true happiness if we cannot connect with the source ( whole, Universal intelligence).

One of the core philosophies of Rumi or Sufism is the desire to return to the source. This separation of loneliness creates fear, anxiety, and insecurity. The true sense of happiness and wisdom is in joining with the source.

Love is not Enough

Love is not enough.
You need someone to trust,
who will never give up
on you,
who will always be there
by your side,
even through the darkest
and most difficult times.

Love is not enough.
You need someone to care for you,
to cherish you,
to wipe away your tears,
and to hold your hand
when you are afraid.

Love is not enough.
You need someone to understand you,
to support you,
to encourage you,
and to believe in you,
even when everyone else
has given up.

Love is not enough.
But if you find someone
who loves you,
who cares for you,
who understands you,
who supports you,
and who believes in you,
then hold onto them
and never let them go,
for they are truly rare
and precious treasures
in this world.

Thinking of someone

"Thinking of someone is sometimes Allah's way of reminding you to pray for them. It could be that they need your prayers at that specific time."

Beware of sadness (احذروا الحزن) - Imam Ibn Al Qayyim's advice

Happy days and sad days are all part of life. Allah tells us that this life is nothing but a test. Even our blessings are a test to see if we will remain grateful and grounded or become heedless in our party mode. And so are our trials and sorrows, to see how patient and loyal we remain to Allah. From an early age, we are taught how to handle setbacks and sorrows yet we fail to compose ourselves in the thick of it, Subhan Allah.

Ibn Al Qayyim may Allah have mercy on him said the word (الحزن) – (sadness) does not appear in the Quran only in the form of forbidding it (ولا تهنو ولاتحزنوا) or in the form of negating it (فلاخوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون).

And the reason for this is that there is no benefit to having sadness in the heart. The most beloved thing to the shaitan is to make the believing slave sad by taking him off track.

The Prophet (ﷺ) sought refuge in Allah (SWT) from sadness:

Ibn Al Qayyim said: Sadness weakens the heart and diminishes determination and wanting to go forward. And there is nothing more beloved to the shaitan than the sadness of a believer.

For this reason, be happy, optimistic, and think good about Allah. Have trust in what Allah is able to do and depend on Him. You will find happiness and pleasure in all situations.

Ibn Al Qayyim said: Don’t ruin your happiness with worry and don’t ruin your mind with pessimism. Don’t ruin your success with deception and don’t ruin the optimism of others by destroying it. Don’t ruin your day by looking back at yesterday.

Bidadariku
