My love for Japanese literature began through one of my favorite Malay writers, who often expressed admiration for Japanese authors. He frequently referenced iconic figures like Masuji Ibuse, renowned for Black Rain, Natsume Soseki, celebrated for Kokoro and Botchan, and Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese Nobel laureate in literature. He also mentioned Yukio Mishima, best known for The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea.
In recent years, Japanese literature has become a cultural phenomenon in Malaysia, captivating book lovers nationwide. This growing interest has led Malaysian publishers to actively translate works by Japanese and Korean authors, enriching the literary scene with fresh perspectives. This initiative not only fosters a deeper appreciation for literature but also inspires more people to discover the joy of reading.
