Yahya Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader, was detained by Israel for 22 years. He was arrested in 1988 by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for his involvement in founding Hamas' military wing and orchestrating attacks against Israeli targets. Initially sentenced to multiple life terms, Sinwar was released in 2011 as part of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal, where over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners were freed in exchange for the captured Israeli soldier.
